Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time or returning to music after years away, your musical journey is where our story begins. We came into existence to teach a variety of musical styles on many different instruments, create performance opportunities, and make lessons affordable–all with you in mind.
Funkytown Then and Now
In the summer of 2019, Funkytown Music Academy was born as the answer to the question “What if Fort Worth had an exceptional offering for classical and modern music education for adults and kids?” It was the curious idea of TCU voice professor (at the time) Dr. San-Ky Kim and Joseph Brandley, all with the support of TCU neighbor University United Methodist Church.
We started with five students and two instructors on guitar and piano. Today, our expanded teaching staff includes TCU and Musician’s Institute grads, as well as gigging musicians in symphonies and rock, Latin, and country bands–all of whom are dedicated to guiding aspiring musicians.

Although we’re serious about providing high-quality music education, we want students to have a ton of fun learning. Our versatile instructors take a creative approach, encouraging students to develop their knowledge and skills through a variety of methods that keep them engaged and a wide range of musical styles that appeal to their diverse interests.
We can guide you on your musical journey toward learning just about any song you want to play, for just about any goal you want to pursue. Whether you’re training for UIL, preparing for college auditions, leading music in churches, playing for retirement home residents, or determined to nail that classic Eagles guitar solo from the comfort of your own living room–we can help you get there.
